- Secondary copper smelters and refineries that can treat oxidised and coated scrap
- Brass and alloy mills that blend No. 2 copper into their melt
- Scrap traders who sort, blend and resell containers
- Fire-refining plants that make anode or ingot from scrap
India, China, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea and parts of Europe are large markets. Import rules differ by country, so check them before you offer.
What buyers need from you
- An honest description. Say how much is wire and how much is solids, and the level of oxidation and coating. Buyers test every container.
- Clean lots: no brass, insulation, iron, dirt or heavily soldered pieces
- Photos and video of the actual lot
- Pre-shipment inspection and a radiation check
- Legal export papers and, for India, a PSIC from an approved agency
A buyer who finds brass or dirt in a container will claim against you or reject it. Sort the lot before you load.
Payment terms you will meet
- TT after inspection at loading, often with a balance against the bill of lading
- Letter of credit at sight for repeat contracts
- Cash against documents
Be careful with "buyers" who ask you to pay for import permits, certificates or registration first. See how to verify a copper buyer.

Questions people ask
What is Birch/Cliff copper scrap?
Birch/Cliff is No. 2 copper scrap. Birch is No. 2 copper wire, which has some oxidation, coating or contamination. Cliff is No. 2 copper solids such as mixed pieces, tube and clippings. Both are typically about 94% to 96% copper.
What is the difference between millberry and Birch/Cliff?
Millberry is clean, bare No. 1 wire of about 99% copper or better. Birch/Cliff is No. 2 wire and solids with more oxidation and contamination and lower copper content. Millberry sells closer to the LME.
How is No. 2 copper scrap priced?
As a percentage of the LME or a discount per tonne below it. The discount is wider than for millberry and depends on the tested copper content, contamination, location and payment terms.
Who buys Birch/Cliff copper scrap?
Secondary copper smelters and refineries, brass and alloy mills, and scrap traders. India, China, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea and parts of Europe are large markets, each with its own import rules.
Can I export copper scrap from Africa?
It depends on the country. Several African countries restrict, tax or ban scrap metal exports, and South Africa runs an export control system for scrap. Check the current rules and make sure the seller holds a valid export permit.
How do I check a copper scrap lot before I pay?
Ask for a dated video of the actual lot, appoint an independent inspector to check the grade, weight and contamination at loading, and start with one container. Do not pay in full before the goods are inspected and loaded.
